Eddie Murphy is Hong Kong Phooey

He’s already voiced one of the best loved, and most memorable, animated characters in recent film history (Donkey from Shrek), but now Eddie Murphy is set to voice an already classic character in the upcoming live-action/animated feature film adaptation of Hanna-Barbera’s classic cartoon, Hong Kong Phooey.

Murphy will be voicing the titular dog; who’s granted the power to walk upright and speak like a human, as well as gaining some rather nifty Kung Fu skills, during a mysterious ceremony; in the movie which will see the ordinary pup transform into a stumbling janitor (his disguise; because obviously no-one would look twice at a dog who’s a janitor), and a powerful, crime-fighting, superhero, along with his sidekick Spot (who happens to be a cat).

Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove; of Alcon Entertainment (the studio producing the movie); have stated that they “could not be happier that Eddie Murphy will star as Phooey, that there is no overstating his contributions to cinema; and to such enduring stars of family entertainment as Shrek and Dr. Doolittle”; and that they “look forward to watching him re-imagine yet another classic character” in Phooey.
