In one of the strangest, most unexpected, yet potentially brilliant, casting moves we’ve heard about so far this year, Hunger Games, Pitch Perfect, and Love & Mercy star Elizabeth Banks has signed on to play the classic villain Rita Repulsa in the upcoming Power Rangers movie.
For those unaware, Rita was a staple of the classic Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV show. An alien witch who’d decided to conquer the Earth, yet kept being beaten back by a bunch of teenagers (known as the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) who wore brightly coloured morphsuits, and piloted special giant robots.
Due to be directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac), the Power Rangers movie (not actually the first – Mighty Morphin Powers Rangers: The Movie was a modest success in 1995) is due to be released on March 24th next year.
Elizabeth Banks also has a number of high profile projects in the works herself; she’ll be lending her voice to more upcoming Lego projects (having played Wildstyle in The Lego Movie); starring as one of the first female war photographers in Rita Hayworth With A Hand Grenade; directing and producing a new take on Charlie’s Angels; directing, producing, and starring in Pitch Perfect 3; and producing a Melissa Leo starring movie about The Most Hated Woman in America for Netflix.
