It’s been in the pipeline for years, and had rumours of various big name actors attached to it (none of which quite drummed up the enthusiasm the studio bods were hoping for), and a number of high profile directors contemplating taking on the challenge, but now New Line and Warner Bros. have officially announced that they’ve scrapped their plans to remake the classic 1981 sci-fi/action movie Escape From New York.
However, the announcement doesn’t mean that there will never be a remake; as although Brett Ratner, Len Wiseman, Breck Eisner, and Jonathan Mostow aren’t likely to direct, and Gerard Butler, Jeremy Renner, Josh Brolin, and Tom Hardy, almost certainly won’t be taking on the role of Snake Plissken, the rights to the film have simply been relinquished, and could theoretically be picked up by anyone; but for now, fans can rest easy in the knowledge that Snake’s memory will remain intact (or at least as intact as it can be with a sequel such as Escape From L.A in existence).
