Much to the dismay of many a fan, Sony Pictures are committed to going ahead with their Total Recall remake, and news recently emerged that Eva Mendes (The Other Guys) could be nearing the top of the list to star as one of Recall’s two leading ladies.
Adapted from the Philip K. Dick story ‘We Can Remember It for You Wholesale’, Total Recall first hit the big screen back in 1990, and remains one of the most beloved Arnold Scwarzenegger action movies to date; thanks to it’s interesting narrative (which keeps the entire movie purposefully vague), fun blend of futuristic action, and three-breasted women.
Colin Farrell (The Way Back) will be taking over the role made famous by Schwarzenegger; that of Douglas Quaid (or possibly Hauser); a man who goes for a virtual vacation to Mars, when unexpected events lead him to go to the planet for real, and save an entire civilization (or possibly not); and as with the original he will be joined by two leading women; his wife Lori, and the sexy prostitute/resistance member Melina.
Starring as Lori made a real breakthrough in the career of Sharon Stone (leading her on to Basic Instinct), and could potentially do the same for whichever actress eventually lands the part in the new version; with Eva Mendes looking to be topping the list that currently includes Kate Bosworth (Superman Returns), but not Inglorious Basterds’ Diane Kruger, as she opted out of reading for the part.
Rachel Ticotin’s (Man on Fire) former role of Melina is the other major female part up for grabs, and currently has everyone from Paula Patton (Deja Vu) and Jessica Biel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 2010), to Eva green (Casino Royale) reading for it, as well as Eva Mendes; who looks to be the most likely candidate for the film, as not only has she proven she can play both types of role (by playing the doting wife in The Other Guys, and appearing as a whore in Bad Lieutenant), but appears to be the only actress reading for both parts.
Underworld/Die Hard 4.0 director Len Wiseman will be directing the remake, which is due to begin filming this coming May in Toronto, and is currently scheduled to be released in glorious 2D (a wise decision, as producer Neal Moritz decided it would be “too much”), in August 2012.
