Several days ago, Vin Diesel posted a photo of himself and Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray on his Facebook page, suggesting that the director was in line to helm the next installment in the Fast & Furious franchise. Today, Gray officially confirmed that he will be directing Fast & Furious 8.
Gray tweeted on Thursday that he was glad to be a part of the team: “Cant ask for better partners than Vin, Neal [Moritz] & Universal. Excited to bring u the next chapter of the #FastFamily saga,” he wrote.
Diesel is set to return alongside stars Dwayne Johnson, Ludacris and Tyrese Gibson. Furious 7 stars Jason Statham and Kurt Russell are also expected to return.
James Wan, the director of Furious 7 and most known for his supernatural horror films, decided not to direct the sequel. Justin Lin, who had previously directed four installments, was prevented from doing so due to scheduling conflicts with Star Trek 3. Other directors who were also considered were Will Eubank (The Signal), Adam Wingard (The Guest) and Louis Leterrier (Now You See Me).
Furious 8 will be released on April 14, 2017.
