As news stories go this may be one that’s so unsurprising people are only being surprised that it wasn’t actually official months ago; as given the immense success of the show, it was a forgone conclusion that HBO would renew Game of Thrones for a fourth season (which they now have).
With season four now set to air next year, fans are still feverishly flocking to their telly screens week by week to watch the show; which returned to the box on Sunday in the US, and on Monday in the UK, and broke records in both the US and UK for the huge ratings surge prompted by the season three premiere.
Season four will chronicle the later half of the third book in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy novels (A Storm of Swords); allowing producers to not only expand the world and include more elements from the novels in this truly epic fantasy tale, but also giving Martin himself more time to continue to work on the future novels, before HBO catch up.
“I do have a considerable lead over them” Martin recently told The Hollywood Reporter, but “my dream chronology is that the books finish first… it’s true that they’re moving faster than I am – the series has its own speed – but I don’t see us catching up for another three years or so, by which time another book will be out. That should give them another two seasons of material. And while I’m writing the last book, they’d be making those.”
Games of Thrones Season 3 is currently airing every Sunday night on HBO (in the US), and every Monday night on Sky Atlantic (in the UK).
