With news of Friday’s tragic shootings in Aurora, Colorado casting a dark and still growing shadow of the release of Christopher Nolan’s latest Batman movie, it appears as if the attack on a crowded movie theatre hasn’t just affected The Dark Knight Rises; as it’s now led to Warner Bros. removing a key scene from their upcoming movie, Gangster Squad (the trailer for which can be seen below).
With a cast that includes the likes of Ryan Gosling (Drive), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2), Sean Penn (Mystic River), Josh Brolin (No Country For Old Men), Nick Nolte (Warrior), Michael Pena (Shooter), Giovanni Ribisi (Contraband), and Emma Stone (The Amazing Spider-Man), Gangster Squad is based on a series of successful LA Times articles, and will focus on the efforts of the LAPD to fight crime and corruption on the 1940s, but has had to remove a key scene from the film because of the way in which it reflects Friday’s violence.
The scene featured Sean Penn’s mob-boss character firing upon a crowded cinema from behind the screen, before bursting through and continuing the brutal attack (as seen in the trailer below), and while that may be more than a little reminiscent of the recent attack, it’s a scene may viewers were looking forward to seeing, and is apparently integral to the film’s plot; which is why a new scene is being devised and shot as soon as possible.
Directed by Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer and scripted by former policeman Will Beall, Gangster Squad was filmed last year, and will apparently still be making its release date of September 7th in the US, and November 9th in the UK, as long as the reshoots go according to plan.
