While the latest X-Files film; The X-Files: I Want to Believe; didn’t exactly set the Box Office on fire, and was met with a rather tepid reaction from fans, it still proved that the franchise has some weight, after being released a full six years after the show ended, and it appears as though star Gillian Anderson is hoping to star is yet another X-Files movie.
Speaking with Movie Fix, the actress who played one of the show’s lead characters; the straight-laced, cynical, FBI Agent Dana Scully (opposed to Californication actor David Duchovny’s Agent Mulder; who believed in just about any supernatural phenomenon, with barely a shred of proof); said that not only are they “hoping to [make a third film]” but that they’ve “said from the beginning we’d be interested in doing one if it ever came up again”, and that “there are some discussions about it.”
Anderson (who can next be seen in Johnny English Reborn) stated that she had “no idea” what stage the discussions were at, if a script exists “or how interested Fox is in doing it”, but also suggested that she believes the paranoia about 2012 offers “the perfect subject matter” for a sequel, and that they’re “all kind of hoping it’s something that might take place”; a sentiment shared by David Duchovny, who seem excited about the prospect of a third film, offered reasons as to why the second movie failed, and said that a new script was already being written last year.
