After the release of the brilliantly fun and nostalgic Expendables 2 earlier this summer, the idea of a female Expendables reared its potentially awful head last month and is clearly moving forward, as MMA star and Haywire‘s lead actress Gina Carano has just been confirmed as the first actress aboard the new action ensemble.
Producer Adi Shankar (Dredd) likened making the film without Gina Carano to “making Twix without caramel or Jamba Juice without jamba”, and said “I don’t know how I’m supposed to make a movie that is supposed to be the female version of The Expendables without Gina Carano in it.”
So far there’s no other casting choices confirmed, though wish lists full of female action stars both past and present are being published by the second, and it shouldn’t be too long before the film which is being scripted by Dutch Southern (who’s 2010 script Hoof Harrington’s Greatest Hits landed on the Hollywood Black List) should have a full cast of action heroines hoping to rival Stallone’s.
