Yes Hannibal the Cannibal will be returning again, and unfortunately the menace that formed the intense, chilling, and downright disturbing, less-is-more, side of his appeal will soon be diluted even further (it’s been heading that way with every movie since Silence of the Lambs), as he’s soon to be the titular character in an upcoming TV show; Hannibal.
Due to be written by and executively produced Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies), along with executive producer Martha De Laurentiis (the woman behind Hannibal, Red Dragon, and Hannibal Rising), the series will follow the backstory of Hannibal Lecter (most famously portrayed by Anthony Hopkins, and Brian Cox before him) discussed in both Manhunter and its remake Red Dragon; as the peckish psychiatrist/serial killer gets to know the FBI profiler Will Graham (the man who finally catches him, and has been portrayed by both Edward Norton, and formerly William Petersen).
It’s still unclear at this point as to just how the series will play out; if it will be a season long story each time, or focus more heavily on Graham, but as likable as Lecter may be, it’d be difficult to paint him as a Dexter type hero given the extremely callous nature of his crimes; and as of yet there’s still no word on who’s looking to fill the series’ various roles, or if character creator Thomas Harris has had any involvement.
