HBO Loses its Luck

Despite fairly low ratings HBO’s horse racing drama Luck; which feared a pedigree cast (headlined by Rain Man‘s Dustin Hoffman, Snatch‘s Dennis Farina, and Warrior‘s Nick Nolte), and came from not only Deadwood creator David Milch, but Heat director Michael Mann; was recently renewed for a second season, even though the first season has yet to finish airing, but in an unexpected turn the network has now cancelled the show altogether.

Luck will therefore remain a one season show, despite the fact at least one new episode had already been completed, however the cancellation shouldn’t come as a complete shock, because despite being called Luck, the show had anything but; with two horses dying during the very first shoot, and a third dying only a matter of days ago.

The crew insisted that they “maintained the highest safety standards throughout production” and that there were “fewer incidents that occur in racing”, yet “accidents unfortunately happen, and as it’s impossible to guarantee they won’t in the future” they’ve reached what they call a “difficult decision.”

Yet, despite the cancellation, HBO are still continuing to produce some of the best programming available on any network, on either side of the Atlantic, and are counting down the days to the return of one of their latest flagship shows; with the Game of Thrones Season 2 premiere airing on April 1st in the US, and on Sky Atlantic on April 2nd in the UK.
