Although he’s still riding on the massive success of N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton, Ice Cube hasn’t been seen on the screen since his supporting role in 2014’s 22 Jump Street. That is set to change, according to Deadline, as Universal Pictures has purchased a script called Humbug, with Ice Cube to star as Ebenezer Scrooge.
Deadline says that the script is a reimagining of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, written by Earl Richey Jones and Todd R. Jones (Rio). The story follows “a wealthy real estate mogul who is shown a path to redemption by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future.” The film is set to reunite Cube with director Tim Story. Story directed Cube in 2002’s Barbershop, as well as helming Ride Along and its sequel (due for a January 2016 release), which starred Cube alongside Kevin Hart.
A Christmas Carol has already been adapted to film over 20 times before, with the most recent being 2009’s version directed by Robert Zemeckis, with Jim Carrey as Ebenezer Scrooge in the lead motion-capture role. A release date is yet to be announced, but Deadline says that a 2017 premiere looks likely.
