Apparently looking to fill the cast of his latest movie with the cream of the crop as far a TV talent goes, director Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy) has reportedly begun courting The Wire’s Idris Elba for a key role in his upcoming action/sci-fi movie; Pacific Rim.
Set in a future where giant creatures threaten to destroy the planet city by city (taking them down with the help of giant robots), Pacific Rim has already cast Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam in the lead role; as a pilot operating one of the new vehicles used to fight the monsters; and looks to have him joined by Elba in an as yet unknown role.
After delivering a sterling, career defining, performance as Stringer Bell on The Wire, Idris has shot into high demand; appearing on numerous TV projects such as Luther, and The Big C, as well as in several films such as in Takers, and Thor; and will soon be seen in the sequel to Ghost Rider, Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, and possibly Django Unchained (as rumours put him in place to take the lead role in Quentin Tarantino’s western, should Wild Wild West star Will Smith pass on the role), and should he join Pacific Rim, will begin filming that later this year, ahead of a 2013 release.
