After years of will they/wont they back and forth over the possibility of an Independence Day sequel, things have really begun to pick up of late, and we now have the first official casting announcements for the upcoming film; with original star Jeff Goldblum set to return for Independence Day 2.
Set to return as MIT graduate, undeniable genius, and original alien-stopper David Levinson, Goldblum will be returning to the franchise and once again directed by Roland Emmerich (who announced Jeff’s return via Twitter), and starring alongside Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games) and Jessie Usher (When The Game Stands Tall).
Usher will appear as the son of Steven Hiller (Will Smith’s pilot in the first movie), in the film which will not see Focus star Will Smith returning to battle the invading space bastards again, and may not even keep its current title (with both Independence Day 2 and ID Forever being bandied about at present), but could see Bill Pullman returning to the fray as former President Thomas Whitmore.
Hemsworth is also set to play Whitmore’s son-in-law (so a return from Pullman, a relative, and the only leader the US have ever had against the aliens would make sense), in the film which has been scripted (most recently) by relative unknown Carter Blanchard, and is due to be released on June 24th next year in the US, before making its official UK release date on July 1st 2016.
