In surprising Sunday news, 20th Century Fox have dropped the first trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence, the sequel to the classic 1996 sci-fi film.
Written by Carter Blanchard, Resurgence is set twenty years after the original invasion, when Earth has recovered and the international community fortifies the planet’s defences with technology salvaged from alien ships. However, the aliens were able to send out a distress signal to other extra-terrestrials before their defeat, resulting in a new force of aliens that threaten the survival of the human race once more.
Independence Day stars Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner will all be reprising their original roles, and newcomers will include Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games), Jessie Usher (When the Game Stands Tall), Maika Monroe (It Follows), Sela Ward (Gone Girl) and William Fichtner (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). Original director Roland Emmerich also returns to helm the sequel.
Independence Day: Resurgence will premiere on June 24, 2016.
