Iron Man 3 Will Be Directed by Shane Black

It was just over a week ago that reports began to emerge claiming that Shane Black (known as one of the best ever action writers; having credits that include the Lethal Weapon films amongst numerous others) could step in to fill the gap left by Jon Favreau, and direct the planned third installment in the Iron Man franchise.

Favreau (the director of both Iron Man films so far) stepped away from the franchise in order to direct Disney’s Magic Kingdom, leaving a gap that Marvel Studios would be eager to fill with a strong director; as the Iron Man series (which is based on Marvel’s Iron Man comic books) is currently one of their best loved movie franchises, and Iron Man 3 is bound to attract a great deal of attention.

Undoubtedly pleasing fans of the franchise (who were very vocal in their approval when Shane was originally rumoured to be up for the post), it’s now being reported that whilst still only in talks, Marvel Studios has entered the final stage of negotiations with Shane Black; meaning it’s extremely likely he will be crowned as the new director of Iron Man 3; and he’s now set to reunite with his Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang star Robert Downey Jr.

Downey will be returning as Tony Stark; the exceedingly rich weapons manufacturer who moonlights as the titular superhero Iron Man; for Iron Man 3, after reprising his role as the charismatic superhero in Marvel’s upcoming superhero ensemble/crossover movie; The Avengers; next year.

At this point it’s still unknown whether or not Black will write the script for Iron Man 3; as despite being known for his writing skills (above directing), his scripts tend to become more racy than the family friendly Iron Man movies; which is due to be released on May 3rd 2013.
