Jemaine Clement to Star in Men In Black III

The upcoming third movie in the Men In Black series was officially announced last month, and will be reuniting both Will Smith (Seven Pounds); as the comical, act-now/think-later, Agent Jay; and Tommy Lee Jones (Volcano); as the much more serious, conservative, and aged, Agent Kay; as two of the titular Men In Black; who are basically intergalactic immigration officers, tasked with finding illegal aliens (who are literally aliens), and making sure that the legal ones don’t cause any trouble, as well as keeping the existence of aliens secret from the general public, and often preventing the destruction of the Earth.

The original release date for the film has been pushed back twelve months, meaning it’s now due out on May 25th 2012; which is still a pretty quick turnaround for such a big movie, as not only has shooting not yet begun, but there will be a considerable amount of post-production needed (given MIB’s heavily effects laden history), especially as MIB III has been officially confirmed as a 3D release, and the cast still isn’t fully assembled.

However, the principal cast has recently upped its number by one, and filled a rather important gap, with Jemaine Clement (The Flight of the Conchords) having recently been signed on to play the film’s villain, Yaz; a character who will undoubtedly end up toiling with Jay and Kay, after somehow threatening the safety of our fair planet.

In fact little is currently known about Yaz’s plan, or the story as a whole, at this point, but writer Ethan Cohen’s (Burn After Reading) script does call for Will Smith’s Agent Jay to travel back in time, to the year 1969, where he will meet a younger version of Tommy Lee Jones’ Kay (to be played by Josh Brolin, who has previously worked with Jones on No Country For Old Men), and while not officially confirmed as yet, the year, and the spacey element of the MIB films, suggests that it’ll likely be tied into the historic moon landing (which occurred that same year).
