Seen as how director Jon Favreau (Cowboys & Aliens) was one of the most influential players in getting the Iron Man movie franchise off the ground, directed both Iron Man, and Iron Man 2, and seemed to have a genuine love for the movies, many people were quick to assume that he would once again be filling the director’s chair for Iron Man 3; something he has now confirmed is not the case.
Whilst no official reasons have been given for Favreau’s decision to move on, it’s possible that he isn’t too keen on the direction of the Marvel universe, and the fact that more and more heroes are being segued into stand-alone superhero pictures; since he’s stated that “in theory Iron Man 3 is going to be a sequel or continuation of Thor, Hulk, Captain America, and The Avengers”, and believes that even Marvel “have no idea” about their whole movie world.
Seen as how Iron Man 3 isn’t due to hit screens until May 2013 there’s still plenty of time for a new director to be locked in (and no doubt rumours of new directors will start getting churned out almost instantly), but for now Favreau’s schedule is full; as he’s confirmed that he’s “directing Magic Kingdom, Not Iron Man 3” and that he’s “had a great run with Marvel, and wishes them the best.”
