It was on the cards for a while, and looked like everything was coming together, until the financial troubles over at MGM Studios saw it being scrapped altogether, but now it seems as though the Robocop remake is not only back in action, but may soon have a signed director.
Whilst it looked like Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan) was due to sign on for some time, and studio bosses have previously spoke with a number of other directors (including Machete’s Robert Rodriguez), word has now emerged that the new MGM bosses have approached Brazillian director Jose Padilha; with the intention of having him helm the return of Robocop.
Due to be a complete remake of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 classic, the new movie will once again focus on a cop named Alex P Murphy who is brutally gunned down; in a city where crime runs rampant; and subsequently rebuilt as a part man, part machine, all cop cyborg that lives for nothing but upholding the law (in essence a Terminator with a badge, and a hefty gun built into his leg).
And while studio bosses think Jose Padilha would be a great choice to direct the movie; having made a great impression with the release of his gritty police thrillers Elite Squad & Elite Squad 2 (which made more at the Brazilian Box Office than Avatar); it will still be quite sometime before the remake hits the local cinemas; seen as how the script is still none existent at this point, and doesn’t yet have a writer attached.
