Like its protagonist, the remake of The Crow is one reboot that just will not die, as even though its been various stages of pre-production since 2007, had numerous re-writes, its lead parted offered to Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter); before he eventually turned it down; Blade’s Stephen Norrington attached to direct; before creative differences forced him to leave; and numerous other directors vying for the gig, it appears to be back on track; as Juan Carlos Fresnadillo has just been given the director’s job.
Best known as the director of 28 Weeks Later (the sequel to 28 Days later), Fresnadillo joins the project hoping to create a much more highly regarded movie than any of the sequels to the original 1994 movie The Crow; which has gained a massive cult following in the years since, and starred Brandon Lee (Rapid Fire) as the ill-fated rocker Eric Draven, who was brought back to life by supernatural forces, one year after he and his fiancee were brutally murdered, in order to avenge their deaths.
Nick Cave (The Proposition) wrote the most recent draft of the script (which everyone who has seen it; aside from one unnamed actor; classifies as “terrific”), however it seems likely that Fresnadillo will be bringing in a new writer to tackle the original James O’Barr comics, before production can be on a still unscheduled date.
