While many a film fan may have been disheartened when Warner Bros. pushed back the release date of its upcoming gangster epic, Gangster Squad, in the wake of the shooting at a Colorado theatre earlier this year (replacing scenes very reminiscent of the recent real-life massacre), the film is still moving ahead towards its new release date, and has a new trailer available to view below.
Whether or not bowing to potential political pressure and correctness was the right idea, the infamous cinematic shootout has now gone (but could one day prove to be an excellent Blu-ray extra and/or director’s cut), yet the new trailer stills boasts a sense that Gangster Squad; the film based on the true tale of a handful of cops who went undercover to wage war on a ruthless crime lord in the ’40s and ’50s; will be more than worth a watch.
Sean Penn (Mystic River) stars as the East Coast gangster Mickey Cohen, and will find his Los Angeles empire threatened when a selected few members of the LAPD; including Josh Brolin (Wall Street 2), Ryan Gosling (Drive), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2), Giovanni Ribisi (Avatar), Michael Peña (Tower Heist), and Anthony Mackie (Real Steel); wage a no-holes-barred war against his operations, and proceed to kill his associates without question.
Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), Gangster Squad co-stars Emma Stone (The Help), Nick Nolte (Warrior), and Sullivan Stapleton (The Hunter), and is now moving towards its new release date; January 11th (in both the US and UK).
