It’s one of Disney’s best loved movies, and its 3D re-release is already going down a storm across the world; as The Lion King 3D has only been playing in US theaters for three weeks, yet has already taken an impressive $79.7 million, and shot into the record books as the highest grossing, hand drawn, animated film of all time; suggesting big things for its upcoming UK re-release.
The Lion King has not only become the highest grossing hand drawn animation of all time, but having grossed a total of $98.7 million in the 19 territories it’s currently open (with plenty more soon to follow), it’s now the highest grossing film ever for Walt Disney Animation Studios, the third highest grossing animated film of all time, and has entered the record books alongside Avatar, Titanic, Star Wars, and Toy Story 3, as one of the highest grossing movies ever.
After unexpectedly outperforming a number of new releases, all eyes are resting on the upcoming UK release of The Lion King 3D, which is due to open in cinemas this coming Friday (October 7th); 17 years to the day since its original release; ahead of the 3D Blu-ray release, which is scheduled for November 7th. And judging by the standards of the recently released Beauty and the Beast 3D Blu-ray (reviewed here) will be a disc every parent, child, and Disney fan will want to own.
