We’ve heard talk of a Luther film for sometime, and it appeared as though the gritty, British, police drama had potentially finished altogether (at least until the film gets the go-ahead), but now know it’s not so; as the BBC have recently confirmed Idris Elba will be returning to his iconic role for two Luther specials next year.
Due to begin filming in March, and shown later on in the year, it wasn’t the only announcement made by the BBC (who announced the return of Top Of The Lake, a two-hour drama starring Anthony Hopkins, and many more), or indeed the only recent Luther announcement; as much to the detriment of many fans, we heard Fox are planning a Luther remake for US audiences, and have commissioned a pilot for the show.
It’s too early to comment on exactly what form it will take, or the quality of any remake (though Gracepoint, Fox’s Broadchurch remake, hasn’t exactly been a huge success), but with both Neil Cross and Idris Elba attached as producers (it doesn’t appear as though Elba will be reprising the role for Fox), it at least stands some chance of retaining its somewhat cynical charm.
