While many a movie is now being adapted for TV (Training Day being the latest), a number of classic TV shows have hopped the opposite way (see The A-Team), and MacGyver looks set to do the same; as Lionsgate are now working on a MacGyver movie.
It’s being developed as an entirely separate project to the MacGyver TV show reboot which is currently moving ahead, but will still takes its inspiration from the classic Richard Dean Anderson show about the engineering genius/government agent who always managed to get out of the hairiest of scrapes by building an amazing gadget out of seemingly nothing.
Fast & Furious producer Neal Moritz will be overseeing Lionsgate’s take, with the aid of the original MacGyver creator Lee David Zlotoff, though as of yet there are no plot details, or casting announcements to be found (as to be expected, when the project announcement itself came from a financial analyst conference call).
Furious 7 director James Wan is handling the TV reboot (he’ll also likely direct the pilot episode); and focussing on Mac’s early days; where we’ll see a young MacGyver (sorry, potential cameos aside, there’s not much chance of Richard Dean Anderson stepping back into the role which saw his bountiful mullet become almost as famous as him) recruited by a shady organisation who are looking to capitalise on Mac’s problem-solving skills.
