It may be 20 years since the release of Kevin Smith’s comedy Mallrats, but the writer/director has just confirmed he’s now working on an official sequel; making Mallrats 2 another journey back to Kevin’s early career, as he delivered a Clerks sequel in 2006 (12 years after the release of the original) and has been working away on Clerks III.
Becoming a true cult classic since its original release (where it did middling business at best), Mallrats has gained a number of fans over the years, and will look to capitalise on that when the sequel gets rolling; which could be as soon as next year.
After teasing Mallrats 2 via Facebook and Twitter Smith took to radio to confirm ”that’s what we’re working on. It’s half a script right now, and we’re pulling our loot together. We’ve got up until the beginning of 2016. By the time we get to May 2016, we’re going to be shooting.”
“Lately I’ve been doing this thing where I’m like, ‘Do you want to do what’s good for your career, or do you just want to have fun?’ Nobody’s clamouring for a Mallrats sequel, but I would love to make one. It’s been, like, 20 years.”
