Since its debut in 2011, BBC sitcom Mrs Brown’s Boys has bounced from strength to strength, and bustled its way into living rooms and theatres across the country, becoming a national comedy phenomenon, so much so that it’s not only on the brink of an imminent movie release, but recently hit a massive milestone in DVD sales.
Yes, this past week, less than 4 years since its debut, and the release of the first series, Mrs Brown’s Boys has sold over 5 million DVDs in the UK (including not only the three series released so far, but Christmas specials, and live shows to boot), packed out theatres with live shows, and even garnered the highest ratings for a TV Christmas special for the past two years running, and will soon hit the silver screen with the imminent release of Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie.
But that’s not all, as Mammy (the titular Mrs Brown, played by series creator, writer, and star, Brendan O’Carroll), and her feckless bunch of grown-up children could be in for the big time; as interest for D’Movie has been so high, that distributors are so confident in the film, Universal Pictures even believe it could help the show break ground in the US (despite currently lacking an official US release date).
Whatever the case for syndication abroad, Mrs Brown’s Boys has done immensely well in the UK and Ireland, and even outsells Hollywood heavyweight titles such as Homeland, Breaking Bad, and Game Of Thrones (yes, that’s correct, more people in the UK pay to rewatch Mrs Brown’s, than Game Of Thrones), and so it should stand in good stead, when Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie is released on June 27th.
