The rumours, teasers, and other informative tidbits, regarding the upcoming sci-fi/action/horror film Predators; the latest in the series of movies starring the chameleon like alien hunter that was first featured in the 1987 movie Predator, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger (Commando); have been slowly trickling out for some time now, and slow little signs of slowing down, as the latest trailer recently made its online debut.
The trailer (which can be seen below) once again explains the premise of the film; a bunch of Predators collect a rabble of mercenaries, killers, gangsters, and other dangerous and nefarious types, dump them on an alien planet (which happens to look remarkably similar to the Central American jungle that was featured in the original), and proceed to hunt them down and kill them one by one, simply for the sporting pleasure it brings them; and actually spoils a few bits (so don’t watch if you don’t want to see what the planets natural inhabitants look like, or find out who dies), as well as showing a number of references to the first film.
Robert Rodriguez (Sin city) has produced, and been the real driving force behind the new movie, which was directed by Nimrod Antal (Armored), and has been dubbed by several sources as the sequel that the original should have had (as most of the first movie’s die-hard fans were less than impressed with the follow-up Predator 2, and despite the Box Office success of Alien Vs Predator, and its sequel, those movies were also not too well received), and features numerous nods to its predecessors; including the main Predator design, the iconic score, weaponry, setting, and subtler elements (that aren’t really all that subtle), such as dropping a mini-gun (“ol’ painless”) into the heart of the jungle.
Adrien Brody (The Pianist) leads the cast, which also includes Topher Grace (Spider-Man 3), Rodriguez regular Danny Trejo (Planet Terror), Alice Braga (Repo Men), The Shield alumni Walton Goggins, and The Matrix’s Laurence Fishburne; who recently worked with Nimrod on the movie Armored, and seems (from the trailer at least) to be something of an expert on Predator killing.
The dreadlocked Predators will be appearing on cinemas across the country, complete with all their hi-tech laser weaponry, giant blades, and cloaking devices, on July 8th; but for anyone who can’t wait that long to get a glimpse of them, there’s always the trailer below, which gives a little bit more information than we had before, and suggests that if the tone keeps up, it’ll be something pretty special.
