Despite having numerous casting announcements, a first image, a release date, and a whole host of rumours, for the new Spider-Man film, it’s still been going without an official title (being referred to simply as Untitled Spider-Man reboot); something which has now changed, as Columbia Pictures have finally announced the name of the new Spider-Man movie, The Amazing Spider-Man.
Clearly taking its name straight from a Spider-Man comic series, the new film is attempting to distance itself from the previous trilogy in a number of ways; including returning Peter Parker (the teenager who will eventually turn into the web-slinging superhero) to high-school, and fitting him with mechanical web-shooters (as opposed to having the stuff come straight from his wrists); and replacing the entire cast.
Leading the film as the titular hero, and his geeky everyday persona, is British actor Andrew Garfield (Never Let Me Go), who will be accompanied by Emma Stone (Zombieland); as Parker’s first love Gwen Stacy; Rhys Ifans (Mr Nice); as Curt Connors/The Lizard; Denis Leary (Rescue Me); as Gwen’s father George; and Martin Sheen (The West Wing) and Sally Field (Mrs. Doubtfire); as Pete’s Uncle Ben and Aunt May respectively.
Columbia have also released the first image of Spidey in full costume (which can be seen below), and despite having a considerably smaller budget than the previous Spider-Man film, the Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) directed The Amazing Spider-Man is being filmed entirely in 3D, and is due to be released on July 3rd 2012 in the U.S., and on July 4th 2012 in the U.K.
