Based on Empty Cradles by Margaret Humphreys, the upcoming drama film oranges and Sunshine chronicles the true story of Margaret’s struggle to uncover, and shed light on, one of the most significant social scandals of recents time; the deportation of thousands of children form the U.K. to Australia.
Taking its name from something the young children were promised (Oranges and Sunshine), the film show’s how, almost single-handedly, Margaret managed to bring justice to the authorities that told children as young as four-years-old their parents were dead, before shipping them off to institutions on the other side of the world, and managed to not only bring worldwide attention to the issue, but reunite thousands of families.
Emily Watson (Red Dragon) stars as social crusader Margaret Humphreys, with with Hugo Weaving (The Matrix) and David Wenham (Public Enemies) picking up the main supporting roles, in the movie which has been directed by Jim Loach (best known for directing British TV shows such as Coronation Street, Holby City, and Shameless), and is due to get its U.K. release on April 1st.
