The world was first introduced to the comedy duo that is Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost, when the pair starred as best friends Tim and Mike in Channel 4’s cult hit Spaced, but since then they have gone on to much bigger and better heights, as their careers skyrocketed after the release of their zom-rom-com Shaun of the Dead, and later the action/comedy Hot Fuzz, and soon the pair are set to star again, in the sci-fi comedy Paul; which has just had its first trailer released online.
Paul tells the story of two British geeks (Pegg and Forst; who seem to be portraying fairly recognizable versions of themselves) who are road-tripping through America in an RV (not dissimilar to the one seen in Breaking Bad), when they accidentally pick up an unwanted hitchhiker; in the form of a small alien named Paul; as they drive by Area 51.
The duo then get into all sorts of adventures with Paul; the cursing, outspoken, alien voiced by The Green Hornet’s Seth Rogen; as they are chased by a special agent played by Juno’s Jason Bateman, and come face-to-face with characters played by Sigourney Weaver (Avatar), Jane Lynch (The 40 Year Old Virgin), and Kristen Wiig (Knocked Up).
Paul looks like it should have no trouble tickling the funny-bone of most moviegoers, and satisfying the desires of many sci-fi geeks; particularly as the effects work (which has been completed by the British-based FX company, Double Negative) looks like it should be rather impressive; when Paul is finally released next year.
And fans of the Pegg-Frost partnership have even more cause to celebrate, as not only will Pegg soon be appearing in the comedy Burke & Hare, and popping up in the next Mission Impossible, but Nick and Simon will actually be sharing the same body in Steven Speilberg’s (E.T.) Tintin movies, and appearing together in The World’s End (the as yet unscheduled third film in the Cornetto Trilogy), but for those who want to see the pair in action before then, Paul’s official teaser trailer can be viewed below.
