Up until as recently as 2008 there was talk of a proper sequel to Point Break getting underway, but as that’s now been shot down by the untimely death of one of its leading stars (Patrick Swayze) in 2009, Alcon Entertainment have marked the 20th anniversary of the action classic by deciding it’s officially time for a remake.
Alcon’s recent press release states that “the new version is set in the world of international extreme sports and, like the original, involves an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a criminal ring”, but had little else to say about the plot of the film; which appears to have gone the extreme sports route, as a means of ditching the first movie’s surf setting.
While Keanu Reeves would have probably returned for a sequel had it been made a few years ago, there’s no word on who will play the two leads in the upcoming remake, who will direct, or even when it’s scheduled to enter production. All we know at this stage is that a remake is on the way, and has been scripted by Salt’s Kurt Wimmer.
