After the success of Resident Evil: Afterlife (which is reviewed here) quickly saw it take the coveted top spot at the Box Office, and skyrocket into becoming the highest grossing movie in the entire Resident Evil film series, we knew that a fifth film would be on the cards (something confirmed by series lead Milla Jovovich in the wake of Afterlife’s triumph), and now Sony have given it an official release date.
While there’s still no script, no director, and no word on any cast members; aside from Milla Jovovich returning as series heroine Alice (something that hasn’t been officially confirmed, but is practically a certainty); fans will undoubtedly be glad to hear that there will be another Resident Evil movie released simply so they can learn how Alice and co. got out of the predicament Afterlife’s cliffhanger ending left them in.
Producer Paul W.S. Anderson (Afterlife’s writer/director, and husband of star Milla Jovovich) is also assured to return in some capacity and, like his wife, has been asking the fans (largely via Twitter) what direction they would like to see the future films take; turning the filmmaking into what Milla describes as “a more interactive process).
So despite widespread critical panning, often annoying fans of the video games upon which the series is based (by not entirely sticking to the plot, or rules, of the in-game world), and generally suffering from mediocre acting and a lack of plot, Resident Evil will be back with a fifth installment; scheduled to be released on September 14th 2012.
