Reader Player One, Steven Spielberg’s most recent sci-fi spectacle, has been slotted for a December 15, 2017 release date.
Directed by Spielberg and adapted by Zak Penn (The Avengers) from Ernest Cline’s novel, Ready Player One is a dystopian tale that takes place in the year 2044, where people prefer to spend their time in a virtual gaming system, escaping from the drudgery of their everyday lives. When the creator of the game dies, players are offered to compete for his fortune in the game itself. What results is a violent easter egg hunt, which inevitably spills over into the real world.
Said Dan Fellman, president of Warner Bros. domestic distribution: “Any film from Steven Spielberg is an event film, so it felt right to date this thrilling new project from one of our greatest filmmakers for the holiday season.”
Spielberg’s The BFG is currently in post-production, and his historical thriller Bridge of Spies, starring Tom Hanks, will be released in October in the US, and November in the UK.
