The third installment in the Riddick series has been in a muted stage of development for quite sometime, and was at one stage slated to have been released round about now; obviously that didn’t happen, but now it looks as if things may soon get underway, as Vin Diesel (Fast Five) recently let slip on Facebook that filming could potentially begin this summer.
However, despite Pitch Black/Chronicles of Riddick writer/director David Twohy recently informed Diesel Riddick 3 (whatever the title happens to be called this week) “can start filming this summer”, it’s not all smooth sailing for the sci-fi actioner; as in order “to make a true R-rated film”, Diesel would need to “work for scale upfront”, (meaning the minimum wage the Screen Actors Guild allows actors to be paid), something he would obviously be less than pleased about.
Vin’s wages would then equate to around $2,000 a week; a wage packet that sounds quite nice to a lot of people but is much less than than he would be used to; and comes as a result of the mixed reception the second movie received, and the reduced budget the next film will have as a result.
Insisting that “money is always second to art, integrity, and spirit” Vin seemed concerned about returning to “that dark place called Riddick”, and asked his Facebook fans to send in their thoughts and comments; which he later called “interesting and intelligent”, before heading off to “see concept art and discuss the potential schedule”, meaning that depending on how positive that meeting went, Riddick 3 could enter production this summer, or remain in its fairly stunted pre-production state. – expect more news as and when it breaks.
