Ridley Scott; the man who gave the world Blade Runner, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, and the recently released Robin Hood; has been focussing his attention on the planned two-part prequel to his 1979 sci-fi/horror movie Alien.
A prequel to the original Alien movie; which has gone on to spawn three legitimate sequels, a spin-off film series, and continues to gain new fans to this day; has been in some form of development since the first film was released, and now has a script being written by the co-creator of Lost; Damon Lindoff.
And Scott promises that the film will be just as “tough, and nasty” as the first; which introduced the world to an Alien race that breeds by having facehugging creatures latching onto human faces and forcibly implanting an Alien embryo inside a person, where it gestates until it grows to sufficient strength to burst out of the humans insides, and hunt down all their mates.
It’s also been described by the director as “the dark side of the moon”; “talking about gods and engineers of space”; and will explore the origins of the aliens, and if they “were designed as a form of biological warfare, or biology that would go in and clean up a planet.”
So whilst the vague hints merely suggest the involvement of a higher power, and don’t give and real idea of how the final movie will turn out, it’s a logical part of the mythology for the prequels to explore; and provided the two-part 3D film holds up to the shock and originality of the first, it should really be something to look out for.
And Ridley Scott is determined to make it a worthwhile prequel, because he has stated that James Cameron (Avatar) “raised the bar” when he made the first sequel; Aliens; and now “has to jump to it”, but insists that Jim’s “not going to get away with it.”
