After catching a glimpse of some extremely brief sfx footage, and getting a look at the first trailer, back in April, Rise of the Planet of the Apes has now had its full theatrical trailer released online; which is available to view below, and features a good deal more footage of the impressively realistic CG apes.
Starring James franco (127 Hours) as a scientist who, when searching for an Alzheimer’s cure, accidentally creates a brain boosting drug that ends up being tested on apes, and inadvertently sets off a course of events that will lead to the downfall of humanity, Rise of the Planet of the Apes (which was previously known only as Rise of the Apes) will be a prequel movie to the popular Planet of the Apes, and takes place in a near future San Francisco.
John Lithgow (Dexter), Brian Cox (Ironclad), Frieda Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), and Tom Felton (Harry Potter) also star in the movie that’s hoping to receive a better reception than Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes remake, but does make a nod to Burton’s effort with the one and only word that Caesar (the ape leading the simian uprising; who’s been portrayed, through the magic of motion capture, by The Lord of the Rings’ Andy Serkis) learns to speak in the film.
It’s still too early to tell if this prequel will go the route of the Burton film, capture the magic of the Charlton Heston classic, or simply become an action filled popcorn movie of the month, but with a promising story, and effects coming courtesy of Weta Digital, there’s every hope that Rise of the Planet of the Apes could be a great movie when it’s released on August 5th in the US, and makes its UK release on August 12th.
