It’s official: after weeks of speculation and rumours, we can finally confirm that Creed director Ryan Coogler will direct Marvel’s Black Panther.
Speaking with Empire magazine, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed the news while also talking about Black Panther‘s place in the Marvel universe: “This one is important. Not only do you get an unbelievable lead character, but you also get all of Wakanda which is a whole new setting and culture to explore.”
Marvel were interested in Selma director Ava DuVernay back in June, but she passed on the gig. Variety also reported in early December that Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray was considered, but after come convincing Marvel snagged Coogler, after he initially declined in early 2015.
Feige also said, “The movie is a big geopolitical action adventure that focuses on the family and royal struggle of T’Challa in Wakanda and what it means to be a king.”
Black Panther will star Chadwick Boseman, and be released on 16 February, 2018 in the US before making its way to the UK on 6 July.
