It’s been talked about for a long while, yet things seem to finally be moving ahead for the planned remake of glorious gangster movie Scarface, as Universal have just hired Jonathan Herman (the scribe behind the upcoming N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton, the trailer for which can be seen here) to write a brand new Scarface.
Of course when the news broke movie fans across the globe threw their dummies out of their metaphorical prams (as hopefully there aren’t too many toddlers who’re big fans of the ’83 film), but failed to realise the Brian De Palma directed film, which starred Al Pacino as immigrant, and eventual drug-lord Tony Montana, was not only a flop at the Box Office on release (only earning its cult status when it hit VHS), but itself a remake of Howard Hawks’ 1932 movie.
This new tale is set to revolve around a Mexican immigrant, who dives head first into life as part of the Los Angeles underworld, rising through the ranks by exerting power and violence wherever necessary, as climbs to the top; proving he’ll go to any lengths to obtain the American Dream, and paying a hefty toll in the process.
As of yet there’s no word on who will land the titular role (not so much as a wishlist even), but we do know Chilean director Pablo Larrain (No) will be picking up the megaphone this time out, and needing to pull some rather big punches in order to lessen the noise of the premature naysayers.
