It’ll still be a long time before we get to see the first part of The Hobbit (now titled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey); the upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel movie focussing on the adventures of the hobbit Bilbo, who found the One Ring; but filming has been underway for a few weeks, and Entertainment Weekly have just released the first three images of the films, featuring Martin Freeman (The Office) as the titular hobbit; Bilbo Baggins; and Ian McKellen (X-Men) reprising his role as the wizard Gandalf, which can now be seen below.
Once again being directed by Lord of the Rings helmer Peter Jackson; who told EW that McKellen is “in fantastic form”, Freeman has “very nice feet”, and production will fall “only 12 days short of the Lord of the Rings” schedule; The Hobbit will bring not only Ian McKellen, but Ian Holm (LOTR’s Bilbo), Elijah Wood (Frodo), Cate Blanchett (Galadriel), Hugo Weaving (Elrond), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), Christopher Lee (Saruman), and Andy Serkis (Gollum), back to the realm of Middle Earth for this epic two-part adventure.
New cast members including Richard Armitage (Spooks), Stephen Fry (Bones), Benedict Cumberbatch (Atonement), Luke Evans (Robin Hood), and the recently cast Evangeline Lilly (Lost), will also make an appearance in J.R.R. Tolkien’s world when The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is released in both the US and UK on December 14th 2012, and The Hobbit: There And Back Again makes its release date on December 13th 2013.
