See Meryl Streep As Margaret Thatcher

Always a source of political contention, the life and work of conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher; the first (and so far only) female Prime Minister in the history of the United Kingdom; will soon be making its way onto the big-screen, courtesy of a biopic movie starring Academy Award winner Meryl Streep as the lady in question, and we now have the first official image of Streep as the iconic PM available below.

Taking its title from Thatcher’s well known nickname; The Iron Lady; the film will be set just prior to the Falklands War in 1982; a time when rising unemployment and a deep recession saw Maggie’s popularity taking a severe bashing, before the war famously reversed her standing in the polls, saw a huge upsurge in popularity, and allowed her to breeze the 1983 election.

Phyllida Lloyd is directing the picture (which reunites her with Mamma Mia! star Meryl Streep, in the first film she’s directed sing the famed sing-a-long) which also stars Jim Broadbent (Moulin Rouge!) as The Iron Lady’s other-half Dennis, and Anthony Head (Buffy the vampire Slayer) as her deputy Geoffrey Howe.

The Iron Lady has been written by Abi Morgan (Sex Traffic), is currently in its second week of filming in London, and is due to get its U.K. release later in the year (as of yet there’s still no scheduled release date for the U.S.), after the first footage is unveiled at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
