After making a huge statement with his impressive directorial debut; Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang; Iron Man fans were delighted to hear that Shane Black would be directing the upcoming third film in the Iron Man franchise (following on from previous director Jon Favreau), and were eager to learn if he would also be writing the script for the movie; something which now has now been confirmed.
Black is actually much better known as a screenwriter, and made his name as one of the best writers in the action genre; creating the Lethal Weapon franchise, penning The Last Boy Scout, and The Long Kiss Goodnight; and although the announcement of No Heroics’ Drew Pearce being hired as the movie’s screenwriter made it look as though Black’s involvement would be limited to directing, we now know Shane will also be co-writing the script with Pearce.
It’s not clear exactly how much say both parties will have in the script, although reports suggest that the majority of the story will be coming from Black himself (moving away from the traditional superhero Vs. supervillain formula, into a more realistic setting) and that Pearce may have been brought in by Disney in order to keep the movie as family oriented as possible (as Black is well known for creating brilliant, but heavily R-rated scripts).
Robert Downey Jr. will be reprising his role as the titular superhero, for Iron Man 3, and will likely be joined by co-star Gwyneth Paltrow (as his assistant/love interest Pepper Potts), in the third film to be based on the Marvel character (After popping up in The Avengers next year); which is due to be released on May 3rd 2013.
