When the recently released character posters (which can be seen right, and below, and clicked to view full size) for Guy Ritchie’s (Snatch) Sherlock Holmes sequel; Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows; arrived, we knew next to nothing about the film’s plot other than the fact that it will see both Holmes and his loyal sidekick Watson squaring off against their most powerful adversary, yet now we have an official synopsis that sheds at least some light on the story.
Both Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law will be reprising their roles as super-sleuth Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson respectively in A Game if Shadows, and following on from the first movie they will be actively pursing Holmes’ new arch enemy; Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris, Mad Men); who is behind the recent murder of Austria’s Prince (which until Holmes arrived, the police had classified as a suicide).
Their investigation will lead to a gentlemen’s club where they meet a fortune teller named Sim (Noomi Rapace, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), who ends up helping them in their quest to bring down Moriarty, and uncover the mystery behind his grand scheme (as the Prince was a mere piece of a much larger puzzle); as they follow clues from England to France, Germany, and even Switzerland.
Stephen Fry (Bones) is also set to appear as Holmes’ equally intelligent, though infinitely lazy, brother Mycroft, and will be joined by returning stars Eddie Marsan (Inspector Lestrade), Kelly Reilly (Watson’s bride), and Geraldine James (Holmes’ landlady), when the action/comedy/mystery is released in both the US and UK on December 16th.
