With the recent first-look image from the upcoming special of BBC series Sherlock looking decidedly more old-fashioned than the modern day affair we’re used to, the costumes should make a little bit more sense now co-creator Steven Moffat has confirmed the special will take place in Victorian times.
Both Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies) will be reprising their roles as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson respectively, but as Moffat has said “the special is its own thing… not part of the run of three episodes… it had to be a separate entity on its own, in its own little bubble”, it will be an event episode, rather than sitting within the established continuity of the show.
Yet fans needn’t despair, as Sherlock is returning for another 3-part series (series 4) following the special. Though as yet dates haven’t been confirmed for either the series or the special, but we do know the Sherlock special is set to air during the Christmas period (so, sometime in December, or possibly New Year’s Day).
