Since directing the theatrical adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s novel, and bringing the Shutter Island film to the big screen, Martin Scorsese is the natural choice to produce a brand new television adaptation, and bring Shutter Island to the small screen, via a planned series for premium cable network HBO.
Having worked for HBO before (notably producing the hit show Boardwalk Empire), and having a plethora of high-profile directing and producing credits under his belt, Scorsese should have no trouble bringing Shutter Island to TV; especially seen as the idea for the show came from Paramount’s TV honcho Amy Powell (who then approached Scorsese about producing), and Marty has already hired Lehane (who not only wrote the novel, but the script for the Shutter Island movie) to script the pilot episode.
Scorsese will also direct the pilot episode for the show (which is currently titled Ashecliffe); set several years before the events of the film, and focussing more strongly on the corrupt past of the psychiatric hospital, the dark secrets it holds, and the unpleasant deeds of those developing the new treatments in the hospital from which the show takes its name.
