The Resident Evil series, and even the Tomb Raider movies, have proved that films based on popular video games can be a success with audiences (even if they’re not exactly swooned over by the majority of critics), and as studios seem to be clambering to release anything they believe comes with a “built-in audience” it should come as no surprise that one of the most instantly recognizable, and truly iconic, video games will soon have its own big screen adaptation; Space Invaders.
Finding its home at Warner Bros. the adaptation of the 1978 game; that simply involved moving a block along the bottom of the screen, and firing up at a barrage of slowly descending blocks, in order to stop them reaching the bottom; will be brought to the screen by producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers) and Gigi Pritzker (of Odd Lot Entertainment).
The pair are currently searching for a writer to develop a project which at this point is wide open; seen as how Space Invaders has no built in story, and can simply have its name tacked on to any alien invasion film whatsoever; similar to the planned adaptation of another arcade classic, Asteroids.
