It’s rare nowadays that you see some originality in filmmaking in western cinema but Richard Linklater’s latest effort Boyhood is something special. A coming of age drama, Linklater shot in real time, over a period of 12 years. Choosing cast members who age in real time to revolve round the growing up of the titular boy, it’s certainly an ambitious project to say the least. Whilst it could be seen as just a clever gimmick, critics and audiences have come together to rave about Linklater’s sterling effort (with a rare certified fresh rating of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes) and you can now own Boyhood thanks to an exclusive digital release via iTunes, ahead of the Blu-ray and DVD release next month.
Boyhood sees Mason Evans Jr (played by Ellar Coltrane) growing up over 12 years from a six year old boy to a, cusp-of-college, high school senior. We see how he deals with coming from a fractured family and how it still functions amongst changes. The development from a video-game-playing youth to a drug and alcohol experimenting young adult is engrossing, as well as Mason’s clever but unambitious time at school. Ethan Hawke (Training Day) is Mason Senior, Mason Jr’s estranged father, who comes in and out of his life when it suits him and Patricia Arquette (True Romance) plays Mason Jr’s mother Olivia who struggles to cope with the speed of how life progresses.
With it being so close to awards show season, now is the perfect time to get on board; catch Boyhood on exclusive iTunes download now, or on DVD & Blu-ray on January 19th, understand what the hype is all about and why it’s deserved, and get a groundbreaking insight into an extraordinary new wave of filmmaking with Richard Linklater’s fresh and invigorating take on a real time coming of age tale for the current day.
