It’s been hinted at for quite sometime, but we’ve just got the official word that Star Trek 2; the upcoming sequel to J.J. Abrams big screen reboot of the classic series; has been officially delayed, and be will highly unlikely to meet its originally scheduled release date on June 29th 2012.
It’s no surprise that Abrams wanted to focus all his attention over the recent months on Super 8 (which has just been released in the US), and now that he’s free he has stated that while a twelve-month turnaround “is not an impossibility” he’s not going to force the film through, because “no one wants to make something that makes its date, but isn’t necessarily worth your time.”
At this point there’s still very little known about the planned sequel, the direction in which it will take Captain Kirk (Chris Pine, Unstoppable), Spock (Zachary Quinto, Heroes) and the rest of the Starship Enterprise, and if Abrams will in fact direct; as he’s said that while he’s “very excited” about what the writers have come up with so far, he told MTV “I want to make sure exactly what I’m being asked to direct before I do it.”
Originally scheduled to film this coming autumn, it’s now seeming more and more likely that filming will be delayed at least until mid winter (though most likely next year), and that Star Trek 2 will then be pushed back for a 2013 release. However fans should be pleased to know that Abrams won’t be content will churning out a mediocre movie in order to meet a deadline (ala Transformers 2), and has made it his first priority to make a film “that people will have a great time watching.”
