Following recent announcements confirming both Dean Cain and Helen Slater (former TV Superman and movie Supergirl respective) would be joining the upcoming superhero pilot, CBS and Warner Bros. have now released the first official images of Melissa Benoist in costume as TV’s Supergirl; which can be viewed on the right, and below, and clicked to view in full size.
Choosing a much darker, less skimpy, outfit than previous iterations (and one much more in line with henry Cavill’s Superman costume from Man Of Steel), the new costume has been designed by Colleen Atwood; the same designer working on both Arrow and The Flash (Warner’s other successful DC comics television shows); who said “I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today.”
While it’s not clear exactly how Supergirl will slot into the currently slate of DC TV adaptations (should it be a stand-alone property like Gotham, or part of a larger, crossover-prominent, television universe like Arrow and The Flash), it’s been rumoured Supergirl will first appear in a Flash/Arrow crossover before transitioning into her own show; where Whiplash star Melissa Benoist will portray the Krypton-born heroine who’s been hiding the powers she shares with her cousin Superman whilst living on Earth, but at age 24 decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and become the hero she was always meant to be.
