One of the most popular children’s cartoons of the 1980s may soon be getting a revival; as animator Mike Young recently said SuperTed could be back on the telly before the end of the year.
Originally a Welsh show (and a hit on S4C before it began to air on the BBC and gain a huge following) SuperTed followed the adventures of an ordinary teddy bear with superpowers, who battled against rivals Texas Pete, the dimwitted Bulk, and Skeleton.
Things would have to change for the show’s next iteration though, as Young has said “we had a gun-slinging cowboy, a flamboyantly gay skeleton and a fat guy who had jokes made about his weight… all these things you just wouldn’t do today. But you can still write the show in a funny, entertaining way.”
It’s not clear exactly what from a reimagined SuperTed would take, though Young has said while talks have been ongoing for two years now the comeback is closer than ever, and confirmed they would “definitely be talking to Melvyn [Hayes] and Derek [Griffiths]” about reprising their roles, and once again voicing Skeleton and SuperTed respectively.
