It was way back in 1990 that we saw the first live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie; starring Judith Hoag (Armageddon) and Elias Koteas (The Thin Red Line); a film which was the fist in a trilogy loved by countless children, but now, 22 years later, news has broken that Turtle Power is rising again; as Jonathan Liebesman has just lined up to direct a new Turtles movie.
Liebesman’s hiring could also mean that the rumours about the new movie taking a much darker tone than the overly child-friendly recent CG movie could be true, as his recent credits include directing both Battle: Los Angeles, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, though while seeing the film take a darker tone may please some fans (who enjoyed some of the adult centred humour and themes in the 1990 movie, and would love to see some of the more grown up original comics realised on screen), it’s fairly unlikely that the studio would shy too far away from pleasing its key audience; kids.
The new Turtles script has already been through several drafts; with both Art Malcum and Matt Holloway (the scribes behind Iron Man), and Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec (the team behind Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol), already having had their respective shots at writing the latest movie return for Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo; yet it’s still not known exactly what form the film will eventually take,or even if it will see the heroes in a half-shell once again tackling their arch-nemesis Shredder, as the plot is even more closely guarded than the secret of the ooze.
